FMCC History
In the fall of 1873 a Mennonite congregation lead by Christian Krehbiel from Summerfield, IL made the move to Central Kansas. The group of settlers came in search of reasonably priced farmland. The group, lead by Christian, set up in Township #27, which eventually became known as Christian, KS. This sparked the name of our Church, First Mennonite Church of Christian. The first services that were held by the congregation were given in German. First Mennonite Church of Christian was set up with support of area churches from Canton, and Halstead, as well as community members. The first minister for First Mennonite Church of Christian was Valentine Krehbiel. Christian Krehbiel, was an elder in the church and gave the first communion with the group that moved from Summerfield. By 1877, the congregation had a building project in place for their own church. Services continued, and in 1908 the church purchased property in town and resolved to move the building into the town of Moundridge. After the move in 1918, area churches including First Mennonite received threats on the door of the building stating that no more German services were to be allowed in the church. This even included threats of arson. Services and church documents were translated to English, but German worship services were still deeply rooted, and continued. It took till 1942 for all services to convert to English. In 1949 the church made the move for a newer and expanded church building. The farewell service for the building that served as their house of worship for so many years was held on July 9, 1950. A week later, on July 15, 1950 the congregation held the first service in the basement area of the new building. They continued to hold services there until the church was completed and decorated on November 5, 1950. The congregation continued to thrive through out the years. In 1973 an older electric organ was replaced with the pipe organ we have today. The church building standing today is a combination of both the build in 1950 and new additions that were added in 1992. First Mennonite Church of Christian has continued in its efforts to serve God in the local community from the days when pioneers crossed the prairies in ox carts to the day of the computer.
