Who We Are

Mennonites are part of the Anabaptist movement which began in Switzerland in 1521. Anabaptists believed that baptism should be undertaken only when a person was old enough to make an informed and conscious commitment to follow Jesus and become part of the church. As a result, Anabaptists rejected the tradition of infant baptism required in both Catholic and Protestant state churches of the day. "Believer's baptism," or baptism as an adult, was a radical idea in the 1500s, and many Anabaptists were arrested and killed for their faith. The Mennonites derive their name from a Dutch Anabaptist leader named Menno Simons whose extensive writings helped form the faith and practice of the growing Anabaptist movement. Mennonites today are known for their commitment to living out the teachings of Jesus through their work in peace-building, service to the vulnerable, and simple living.
